G6_Speed and Motion 800 – 900L_03_test

During the first two miles, Michelle and her friends pass people that are out for leisurely strolls. Michelle and her friends are traveling faster than the people walking. Suddenly Michelle hears someone yell, “On your left!”

She looks over her shoulder to see a group of bike riders quickly approaching. Michelle and her friends move over to the right side of the path so the approaching riders can safely pass on the left side of the path. They are going much faster than Michelle and her friends. Michelle notices they are wearing jerseys and assumes they are from the local racing club. Wow! They are superfast!

Finally, Michelle and her friends reach the end of the path. It has been exactly an hour since they started the ride. Again, Michelle thinks about what she learned in Science class. Speed is the distance an object covers divided by the time it takes to travel that distance. For Michelle and her friends, that calculation indicates their average speed to the end of the path was five miles per hour. They covered the five miles in one hour. That is not a bad speed with a strong head wind. The group also stopped a few times to look at different things.

On the way back, Michelle and her friends should be able to ride much faster. They will have the wind at their backs. Michelle wonders if they can make it back to the start of the path in 45 minutes. If so, what would be the speed for this last portion of the ride?

So far, the morning has been very enjoyable for Michelle and her friends. They are spending the morning in motion. Their position is always changing as they pedal along the new bike path. They are seeing a lot of new things. Maybe on the way back they will travel more slowly to make the fun last longer.
