B.7D Genetic Engineering Level 6.7 – 03
Genetic engineering has been used to help patients with other diseases like cystic fibrosis. It has been used to study the role of proteins in Alzheimer’s disease.

Genetic engineering has many uses in agriculture. It has been used to improve the nutritional value of crops. It has helped to develop resistance to diseases and higher growth rates in plants. Golden rice is an example of crops with added nutrients. The gene to make beta carotene is added to the rice. Beta carotene is converted to Vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A is needed for a heathy immune system. It is also important for proper vision.
Vitamin A deficiency is common in developing countries. Golden rice can be a tool against this problem. One of the arguments against the Golden Rice Project is that it is too costly. Other programs cost less and help with malnutrition. Genetic engineering can help in many areas in medicine. Certain diseases could be wiped out with the help of this technology. It can be used to make drugs and vaccines. These could be more effective with fewer side effects. Stronger plants that resist disease can be created by increasing the total yield of crops and shelf-life. Cost of production can be lowered. Lower use of chemicals would make it more friendly to the environment.
This new field of science must be carefully controlled. If used properly, it can help society. Scientists would have to be aware of safety issues. They must be careful when they use this great technology for the good of all.
