For a mutation to pass on to the next generation it must occur in {[Sex cells]}.

Mutations that occur in germ line cells are passed on to the offspring. This results in variation in the population. If the change increases the adaptability of the organism in a changing environment it increases its chance of survival and therefore can be the basis of evolution.
