G3- Water in its Various states-600-700L_02

When you think of water, what do you typically think of?

Is it a nice glass of cool, clear water or maybe a beautiful blue ocean?

Maybe you think about a crystal-clear lake near your house. You are not alone when you think about water in these various ways.

It is true water is often found on Earth as a liquid. While you see water as a liquid all around you, do you know it can also be a solid? Water can even exist as a gas under certain conditions. These different forms, or states, are called the “states of matter”. Whatever the form, it is still water.

If water changes from one state to another, it is considered a physical change. Most physical changes are reversible. For example, liquid water can freeze into solid ice when it is cooled. The frozen water can then melt and turn back into liquid water when it warms up again. Water can also change from a liquid to a gas and back again. No matter what physical state it is in, it is still water. Where can you find water in its various states?

For certain, the most common state of water is as a liquid. Life on Earth depends on liquid water and could not exist without it. Animals and plants both need liquid water. It’s a good thing there’s so much liquid water. Over 70 percent of Earth is covered by water.

It can be found in lakes and ponds near your home. It can be found in rivers and streams that carry water across Earth’s surface. Perhaps not surprisingly, most of the liquid water on Earth is found in the oceans. However, not all the water on Earth is liquid.
