There are four planets that orbit closer to the Sun. They are called the inner planets. They are made mostly of rock and are solid. None of the inner planets have rings like the outer planets. They also take less time to circle around the Sun. Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are the inner planets.

The solar system is an interesting place. Science has given us many answers to our questions. We now know Earth is not the center of the universe. We also know the Sun is the center of our solar system. It has eight planets that circle around it. One is our home—planet Earth.
