Deforestation Approaching-02

What you see below are farms bordered by barren landscape. Where are the trees? Where is the jungle you thought you would see?

In many parts of the world, including Madagascar, forests are disappearing at an alarming rate. What is the cause of this global loss of forests? The loss of forested land, or deforestation, is mostly caused by people. Deforestation occurs when people cut down trees without replacing them. Why would people do this? We know that trees are important for many reasons. However, as populations grow, people remove trees to raise crops or animals for food. They may also cut down trees for the wood to build homes. People cut down trees to burn in order to heat their homes. Scientists believe deforestation an environmental crisis. Deforestation eliminates natural habitats of many species of plants and animals. It may also produce worldwide climate damage.

Madagascar is not alone when it comes to the threat of deforestation. The tropics have been under threat of deforestation for many decades due to their abundance of trees. You learned in school about the importance of the Amazon rain forest. You know its importance in terms of global warming.

The Amazon may be the largest single concentration of trees on Earth. Collectively though, there are many areas of the world that could also have a big impact Earth’s climate.
