Tidal Waves_Page03_approaching
Waves are everywhere. They can be found in the ocean. They travel through space as light. They even carry our phone calls. No matter the type of wave, they all share some common features. The wave itself is a disturbance. It is transferred through a medium. The wave transfers energy from one place to another. In the case of tsunamis, scientists do have ways to detect them early.
Unfortunately, the Indian Ocean does not yet have this equipment. The Pacific Ocean, on the other hand, is equipped with special buoys. These buoys can detect the smallest changes in sea level.
That is good news for people living on the coastlines of the Pacific. This does little to help the victims of the famous Indian Ocean tidal wave. However, it did make everyone aware of the dangers of tidal waves.
It also made governments aware of the dangers and the solutions. They are much more likely now to support using early warning buoys. This is good news for the people living along coastlines around the world.
