How Stars Are Classified

You have learned some stars are bigger than our Sun and some stars are smaller. Size is only one characteristic of a star. To really learn about stars, you need to know about their color.

Stars come in many colors. The color of a star tells you how hot or cool it is. Sometimes it can tell you about its size.

Color and Temperature

Stars can be classified by their color. Each class of star is given a letter, a color, and a range of temperatures.

Classifying Stars by Color

How hot a star is, is usually because of its size. Bigger stars produce more energy. As a result, their surfaces are hotter. This is not always true. Some very small stars are very hot. Some very big stars are cool.

No matter how stars are classified, our Sun is the best. It is our star, the Sun, that gives us light and heat. Without it, life on Earth could not survive.
