How Can Gravity Be Overcome?

“What goes up, must come down.” You have probably heard that statement before. At one time this statement was true, but no longer. Since the 1960s, Man has sent many spacecrafts into space. Some are still travelling away from Earth. It is possible to overcome gravity.

Do you need a giant rocket to overcome gravity? No, you actually do it every day. Do you ever climb stairs? If so, you have overcome gravity. What if you jump on a trampoline? Yes, then too! Everyone can overcome gravity. You just need to apply a force larger than gravity. Can you think of other things that overcome gravity?

Planes and kites overcome gravity. They are able to stay in the air. Birds too can overcome gravity. What do things have in common? Correct! They have a force that holds them up. Birds flap their wings. Planes have engines that spin. The plane’s engines push the plane. They hold it in the air. Kites float on the breeze. If the plane did not have engines it would not stay in the air. If the wind was not blowing the kite would fall to the ground.

Think about that the next time you jump into the air. You are overcoming gravity for a brief second. Enjoy it while it lasts. Eventually, gravity will win the battle.
