It’s almost that time of year again that you always dread, Mom’s birthday. Your dad seems to get off easy. Mom just tells him what she wants, and he buys it for her. He gets off so easy! It’s never that easy for you and your sister. When the two of you ask what she wants, you hear, “You guys are all I need.” This comment is usually followed by a big smile. You’ve been on this planet long enough to know better. She wants something, but what?
You and your sister only have the money you earn from doing extra chores. Whatever you buy cannot cost too much, so you need to be creative. What is it that she really wants, but would never buy for herself?
Last Tuesday, Grandma stopped by and was talking about her parents. She explained how they came over from Sweden. She even knew information about their parents and how they had moved from Germany to Sweden during World War 2. When you asked her about grandpa’s family she said, “We do not know much about his ancestry since he was an orphan. He was adopted by a family that already had six children.” Grandpa had a wonderful life but always wondered who his real parents were. It was then you had your epiphany.
You and your sister could buy Mom a kit to test her DNA. You all could learn about grandpa’s parents and find out about the family ancestry. You finally did it! You found a great gift you guys could afford and something Mom would truly enjoy. Later that evening, you and your sister purchased the kit online.
