It’s a Monday and the first day of spring. Alarm clocks around the globe start chiming. People prepare to start their day. Paolo, Edwin, and Nolan are all in fifth grade. They have never met. They live far apart from each other. Paolo lives in Brasilia, Brazil. Edwin lives just south of Atlanta, Georgia in the US. Nolan lives near Fairbanks, Alaska, US. Monday mornings are hard in any location.

This morning though, it’s just a small dish of yogurt. Edwin’s mom also cooks breakfast on weekends. On Saturday morning, she makes omelets with ham, cheese, and green pepper. On Sunday, she makes pancakes. Edwin likes to smother them in maple syrup. This Monday morning, he is handed a piece of toast and an apple. He washes it down with a glass of juice.
The boys all finish eating their breakfast and prepare for their walks to school. All three boys have many things in common. They all like school. However, they wish it started later so they could sleep in. They all like learning about new things. They also like seeing their friends and playing sports after school.

All three boys must walk about a mile to school. Paolo lives in the city, so he must cross many busy streets on the way. Edwin lives on a farm on the edge of town. He likes taking the shortcut through the pasture. He sees cows on the way. Nolan lives in a wooded area just outside of Fairbanks. Most of his walk is along unpaved roads. They are covered in snow this time of year. Today is a typical spring day for all of them. Because of where they live, they all wear different clothing on their walks to school.
